We welcome Max Arterburn of Prospects Live as a very special guest. He is going to give us a deep breakdown and analysis of the newest prospects to be found in 2026 Bowman. If you are a prospect hunter / collector, this is the first in a series of must listen episodes. We start here with the AL East and which players can be chases, sleepers, or passes.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to Talking Cars with Grand Salami and the Juice. I am the Juice here today. And I am, first of all, Grand Salami, of course. How you doing, Bert? I'm doing good. How are you doing, Juice? I'm doing good too. Thank you. And I am very excited. We have a very special episode, very special guest. We have Max Arterburn. Actually, am I saying your last name right? All right, perfect. Max is known for Prospects Live and his Bowman takes. At least that's where I've learned to know him from, and a lot of hobby folks have known him from. He posts an article for all the big Bowman releases along with others on Prospects Live, and it pretty much gives you all the info you need to know.

SPEAKER_02

Ever since I started getting back into the hobby, it has been a milestone moment in every Bowman flagship release that leading up to release, I get to read Max's article. And he's been bothered by me in advance trying to get sneak previews and try to get the information before everybody else. Because I definitely use everything that he does to price out my brakes, and I super appreciate it. It's such a fun part of every Bowman release to read your stuff, Max, and really just appreciate you coming on.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm always glad to give any information when I can. And it's more than just me. It's we have multiple, we've always had multiple guys working on that uh at Prospects Live. Uh right now it's um it's th three of us. Uh Wheel Drivers has been around there for a while for the last few previews. And and we also have a third third guy who's you're familiar with from from uh from Twitter. It's it's Herky. It's uh Kevin, Kevin Hamlin. He's running for us. Yeah, good to get a third person on there.

SPEAKER_02

That's awesome. Is this his first go round doing it?

SPEAKER_00

It is. This is his first go round. He's there's a lot of extra complaint mode now. Yep, a lot of good stuff at the core of his uh of his write-ups. We'll we're smoothing out the edges, but but he's a lot of good stuff at the core of his write-ups. He's he's doing pretty well.

SPEAKER_02

And he's the man. Yep, that's cool.

SPEAKER_01

So you'll be able to view his Max's and everyone else's complete write-ups on Prospect Live. This is gonna be more of a surface level analysis, just a few tidbits and notes. But if you really want that deep dive, follow Max. Max, what is your Twitter handle?

SPEAKER_00

It's just at Max Arterburn. Okay, perfect. Real simple.

SPEAKER_01

And uh Prospects Live, I'm sure you'll you'll post when you have that ready and available. And I'm sure you'll get a million reposts from everyone trying to share it, even though they like to keep that info to themselves so they can try to try to snipe those sleepers. Yes. All right, so what we're going to do here today is we are gonna break down the American League teams. Um, we are going to do this by division. So, first we are going to start with the ALEs. We are only gonna cover players with a fo first Bowman card or first Bowman auto, or their very first auto in Bowman in some cases. They might have shown up before. So we're gonna start off with the Baltimore or Baltimore Wahewa Aloy. He is the he was the 31st overall pick in the drafts. He's a shortstop. So, Max, what do you got for us on him?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, he won the golden spikes last year. That's the first thing that's gonna add like the um the intrigue to the hobby just straight off the bat. You know, best collegiate player in the country winning that award is is number one going for him. The other the other one he has going for him is he is he has a really good power, he's really good power. Those are the two things that that he has going for him very strongly right now. He the there's a reason that you win the golden spikes and you don't get drafted until 31, though, though, right? Usually, usually that when you win the cult collegiate player of the year, you think that player is going to go you know high in the first round. But it was it's always been really well known that he has issues. His issues are that he makes terrible swing decisions. It's a high chase rate and a pretty low walk rate. Right now, the neither of those things are terrible in in high A, but I would expect those to probably start to come exposed. It's not going to affect his card pressing. His card pressures are gonna be great because he just has so much other things going for him because he has the power. He's gonna be he's a surefire shortstop. It's just it's just that I don't know exactly where that hit tool is gonna end up. It's not right now, it doesn't look good enough. It could end up good enough to be in the majors, and you want that power, you have that power, but we'll see how the rest of it develops.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, yeah, of course, power is probably the biggest thing people are looking for in the hobby. So, you know, definitely a guy to keep an eye on if he has that potential. Next up, we have Trey Gibson. I believe he's auto-only. He's an undrafted starting pitcher.

SPEAKER_00

He um he has he's gotten pretty far in throughout the through the development system. He's in double double A, I think, now. He has one really intriguing pitch. He calls it a death ball. It's really just a it's a gyro slider, but it's got really good, it looks like a cutter coming out of his hand, like all gyro sliders do. But his moves really late. That makes it like edging towards a plus pitch, right? So the high K potential is there, but his command of that pitch, everything keys off of that. When he's locating that well, he gets a lot of swing and miss on that. When he's not, then it it can get hit around. Um and his fastball is nothing super special, but he's close to the majors. He is probably going to be a starter. So those are the things that we have going for us with for Gibson.

SPEAKER_02

Do you think it's possible? I mean, we've seen such a change in the way that the hobby thinks about pitchers. Do you think it's possible for a pitcher that doesn't throw 95 plus to really make a hobby impact early on in their amateur career?

SPEAKER_00

I I'm looking for spikes, right? I think I think he could, he has potential to string together, you know, eight, 10 starts in the minors, even in even in early career in the majors, and that would cause a big spike as far as him being a long-term MLB pitcher. That remains to be seen. He has to he has to show us that he can maintain those those command that command through a bunch of starts.

SPEAKER_02

Having a pitch called the death ball might help your base auto price a little bit, though.

SPEAKER_00

That's a it's not unique to him. He didn't make up that turn that's that's existed for a while. All right. Next up we have Andrew Tess. Yeah. And he is He's a complete he was a 24 2024 late round prep catcher. Um, which is never a good thing for the hobby. You though those catchers always take longer to develop, and the team is drafting them, hoping them to stay behind the plate, unless you get someone like a Titan Gray, who they never really had a plan to put at catcher. But he's a catcher, he's a died-in-the-wall catcher. His offensive tools have not developed at all yet. He's not much of a hobby name at all.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, right now. Then let's not spend any more time on him. Sorry to you, Andrew Tess, but you're not why we're here. All right. We have Esteban Majia. He is an international starting pitcher from the DR.

SPEAKER_00

He's he's fun. He's super fun. He he's he's 19 years old, and his average fastball velocity is already at 98. He is the highest octane of arms in the entire product. But like most 19-year-olds, a lot of the time he doesn't know where the ball's going. He's got other good pitches that are also high octane pitches. Nothing he throws is necessarily even in the 80s. Everything is 90 and above with him. It's just like, whew, if he can get that command going, it's he could be top of the rotation. But if he doesn't, he could still be a back of the end bullpen guy. Which is gonna say, are they trying to develop him as a starter to start with? Yeah, that's the goal right now. He's only in low A. Uh, he's only 19, so there's there's quite a ways to go. But but um it's so far so good, but he needs to start making command gains the next few years. What level is he at? He's at low A.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay, already at 19.

SPEAKER_01

Last guy for the Orioles, we have Victor Figueroa, chief rounder, I think originally directed by the Padres.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he had a season of two halves last year. He started off really hot with a lot of power, and then he got traded. It was even before the trade, though, he really started to cool down. You know, the the hit tool still looked okay, but there was there was just no impact in his game. Now he's come back this year, he's starting, and it's been really well. It's gone really well again. Um, we'll see if he can maintain that throughout the course of the year, maybe get him bumped up another level. Um we'll see. There's quite a bit of hobby intrigue. The the hot start has me hasn't bumped up all the way back into tier three, but he's a first baseman. That's another knock in the negative because you really got to be impactful with the bat if you're gonna be a first baseman and you're gonna play in the majors, right?

SPEAKER_01

So out of the Orioles, who is maybe not necessarily doesn't have to be the best player, but who's the player that should really have the most eyes on that? Probably still alloy.

SPEAKER_00

Um, because because he has maybe the widest path because of the defense and the power. We don't care about defense, but that's gonna get him closer to the majors pretty in a pretty quick order as long as they're hitting enough. And right now at high A, at high A, he is hitting enough. So he'll get tested at at double A, you know, maybe in the next four weeks, even because he's he's doing well enough.

SPEAKER_02

How good is he? Like, uh, where would you expect, for example, his base auto to kind of come out uh in terms of value out of the entire checklist?

SPEAKER_00

I I don't do much in terms of pricing, but I would say he's maybe a top 20 name. Okay. Top 20, but not top 10? No, no, I don't think so. Okay, got it. I think this is a deep enough checklist where we don't have to put him in the top 10. And I wouldn't, I wouldn't want him in the top. I wouldn't, I wouldn't personally chase him as a top 10 name. Even even if he ends up top 10 in pricing.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. I'd rather take a flyer Majia based off of what you said. Yeah, I'm a sucker for pitching. All right. So let's move on to the Boston Red Sox. Uh bigger market, of course. So these names will carry a dollar premium. Bigger market trying to chase these players. We have four names in the checklist for the first Bowman guys. I believe this first one is just base cards, no autos. Andy Azokar out of Venezuela signed for I think just 40,000 outfielder. How are you feeling?

SPEAKER_00

That's cheap. So he was he had a kind of a in signed in 2024. He had a um mediocre season in the DSL. Um that there wasn't really a lot to take away from it, except that he picked up spin really well. So that's why, that's why they moved him to the complex last year. And he made short work of that going to Low A, but then he just hit a complete wall. And it's and you know, nothing has really translated since then. He is a big dude though, so there's hope that eventually everything gets to fringy, and but everything gets to fringy, he he's he'll start to to gain levels, but he's not there yet. It's only 19 though. So there's there's still hope, but but like it's just he's not showing anything for to us yet. There's nothing to lash on to hobby-wise. You know, he still could be an average major leaguer, but he's not showing us anything, but he will be right now.

SPEAKER_01

Next up, we have Hector Ramos signed, uh, got a signing bonus of 500,000 out of the DR, shortstop.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's he's a he's really still on the flyer territory. His performance at the DSL, he showed everything you want to see from a shortstop, signed for a significant bonus like he did, but there's also a lot of whiff still there. He's he's in the dart throw territory for now. Nothing, nothing truly special about his profile at this point.

SPEAKER_01

Let's move on to Justin Gonzalez. $250,000 out of the DR as well. Big boy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's the dude for the for the Red Sox. He's the dude every Red Sox Spaniel is gonna be chasing in this. Um, well, Will did his write-up. He he did a great job with it. He said that the the raw power is incredible, that the raw power is judgy in, but he can't elevate anything right now. He's he's still young, you know. He's uh he's in high A and he's only 19. Bat is advanced enough for that level, even. No issues with strikeouts despite being what six foot five, I think he is. Uh and he has the arm to play outfield for now. He's again 19, big body, that could go negative pretty quick, which would put him at first base, more pressure on his bat. But if his bat's hitting that ceiling, it's not gonna matter. He does have the power to be to be that guy. If his raw power comes to fruition, it's 40 homers, easy, with a decent hit tool. Um, because you know, he's he's this young, he's already in high eight. There's, you know, they they don't promote guys that are that young to that level that quickly unless they think they can handle it. And he is, you know, he's at least handling it now. It's not special yet, but he's handling it. So there's there's a lot to like about him, and that Boston market is just gonna go crazy for him.

SPEAKER_01

Someone to be excited for, okay. And last guy for the Red Sox, we have Nellie Taylor, late round pick, outfielder.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he was a JUCO 11th rounder in 2023. He's been promoted pretty quickly. He's at double A now, but with every promotion, it's just been a decrease. Yeah, he's just being promoted for his speed, and he's a he's a warm body at the level. He's not really any prospect to get excited about.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm seeing uh something right now on uh Justin Gonzalez. Yesterday he had the second hardest. Well, it wasn't yesterday, but during spring trading, he hit a ball at uh 117.3.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yes, the the exit velocities, like I said, the exit velocities are judgy, and you know, you can hit the ball real hard. He's just gotta he's just gotta figure out how he's gonna elevate that. The he just has doesn't know how to use those levers. He's got the long levers, he doesn't know how to use them yet. And there's the question of what will that cost him when he figures it out? Will it cost him a bunch of contact ability? Because that that happens sometimes as well.

SPEAKER_02

How's his speed? Is he is he a does he run well?

SPEAKER_00

Not particularly. He's it's enough for outfield right now. It's enough for outfield right now. It could slow down more.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, got it.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Well, I don't even have to ask you about which player you're looking at for the Red Sox. It's pretty easy.

SPEAKER_00

It's very easily Gonzalez.

SPEAKER_01

Let's move on to the Yankees. We will start with. Well, we have four players here. Juan Torres, who just has base cards, no autos. Uh, looks like he plays middle infield, a second and third. He's from the DR as well. How are you feeling about him?

SPEAKER_00

He put up some empty calories in the DSL. It's a hyper-aggressive approach. He's a second baseman. I'm not saying anything positive. There am I. Yeah, he he needs to develop a lot in his approach to do anything, but I don't even if everything turns out positive, he's probably a bench back. But he's more than likely right now it's trending towards being a non-prospect. But again, only 18.

SPEAKER_01

You don't have to feel compelled to say positive things about Yankees on this podcast. That's okay.

SPEAKER_02

Now the Mets. Oh, he doesn't he doesn't get to do the Mets. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

I think the Mets just have a couple players in this product anyway, but whatever. That's for another time. All right. Next up we have Dylan Lewis. He is with the Marlins now, though, so just beware. Direct to the 13th round outfielder.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we can move past the 13th round thing. He's he's proven himself to be a lot more than that. He's shown a lot of power, and I think that's gonna be there to stay. The only question is how much of a hit tool does he have? Right now it's it's showing his fringy, which would be good enough for him to make it because he is he has enough speed and enough ability in defense in center field to be a valuable to a to a team, to the Marlins. And they'll they'll use him maybe by the end of this year. He's at double A. Um, if he if he's hitting homers and hitting like 270, 260 somewhere there in double A, and he gets a promotion to triple A, you know, they they could use him by the end of the year. He should be fairly quick to the majors, but it's it's the power that we that we're interested in, and he has it. So how much is he gonna get to? That's the question. It's like I think so so him and the guy we're gonna talk about in the second run field, I think their cards are gonna be highly liquid at release because people are gonna get him in a Yankee with with Yankee breaks, or they're gonna pull a Yankee, or the Yankees fans are gonna have him, and they don't want him anymore because they're he's not a Yankee anymore. So they're so so be on the lookout for deals on those guys if you like them.

SPEAKER_02

It's like Augustine Ramirez all over again from 24 Bowman. It's like the minute he got traded, his cards went down like 50%.

SPEAKER_01

Um all right, well, let's go move on to the next guy then. We have Henry Lelane, and he is from the DR side for 350,000. He's a left-handed pitcher, but I think the most interesting fact is he was actually born in the Bronx, which is pretty cool for Yankee players.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. He moved he moved to the DR in the when he was an early teenager. And to just to get trained down there, it was a he's an easier path to to get signed when you're down there. Um if you've got if you got the stuff and he showed he had the stuff early. So uh so that so you know he went back down with his with his parents and with his dad. I think it was his dad. I'm not positive on that. Um that's where he trained and signed with a DR there. Uh he's 21 years old now. Um and he's only in low A. He's been hurt, he's shown not much control, but Yankees fans aren't gonna care because he's super fun to watch. He's got a lot of pitches with a lot of movement. I think he's gonna end up in relief. He's never put up a workload. It's like it's like two opposing forces. The Yankees market's gonna love him, but the reality, I don't think he's ever gonna get there because he's he's an older prospect for for Low A to begin with. It's just like he was on it, if he was on any other team, he would be an afterthought. But with the Yankees, with you know, as as much as his pitches move, he's gonna be desirable. His off speed and his fastball have very different velocities. There's not there's no tweener pitch in there, so people can sit on one or the other and just attack, attack, attack it. Or they guess wrong and they just look ridiculous whipping. Um, but you know, more advanced hitters are gonna key in on that and they're gonna figure out a way to pick it up out of his hand and just tee off on it.

SPEAKER_02

It's what's funky about him? Is he a weird arm slot guy?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he he is he's a bit of a weird uh what is he's a lefty. That that that's that's one thing. He does har hide the ball very well, and it's just it's really good movement as well. It's just it's just I will not be after him. I don't think anybody except Yankees fans will be after him, but you know, he's he's the best guy that's currently a Yankee in the product.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that always means something.

SPEAKER_01

So I'm on the side of if and when he gets called up. I think the New York media is gonna go all over him being a kid for the Bronx. And I think that those fringe collectors are gonna go crazy for his cards. So that's when I would sell. I know that usually you want to sell a lot of the time right when the product releases, because that's when you're gonna get like that first mover advantage. But for him, I just I think the Yankee media is gonna sell that card for you pretty much when he gets called up. So that that's what I'd be looking forward to if I happen to hit one of his cards. I'm not chasing him, but that that's how I would probably go about that.

SPEAKER_00

There's still a lot of risk that he even makes the majors. Um, I don't think he's ever pitched more than 30 innings in a season. Not sure on that number, but it it's not very high.

SPEAKER_01

Last guy we got for the Yankees is TJ Rumfield. He is with the Rockies now and he is playing, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. He earned a spot as a lineup regular. He started a bunch of games at the beginning of this year. He's kind of fallen off that a little bit, but it's it's always just average with him. He's got okay power, okay hit, could be average, could be you know a little below average. He's definitely only a first baseman. So it's just there's not a lot of exciting things going on with him, unless he gets on a hot streak and he has a bunch of homers, which is also possible. Um he he lowered his launch angle at one point, and that's what spurred him to where he is now. That's what took away some of his power, but it's it's got under the majors, so that's that's a positive for him.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. So for the Yankees, Lilane is the guy to go for. Only two of the four players are still with the Yankees. So just something to think about if you take them. And let's move on to our next team. We will talk about the Tampa Bay Rays. We have three players here. Daniel Pierce will start with 13th overall pick in 2025. Shortstop.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's uh he's really good. Potential to be above average across the board. Nothing is really standing out right now. He I saw him hit some high velocity liners that got over the fence in his first few games of of low A. I haven't watched much since then, but it's like, yeah, he if he if he gets barrels, it's gonna be high off the wall or going over the fence. He he's got good, good, he could be average across above average across the board. He should be able to stick as a shortstop. It's it's really good projectability with him. There's not much to dislike about his profile. It's pretty obvious name, though. He's he's gonna be the dude for for the for the race.

SPEAKER_01

All right, let's move on to James Quinn Irons, fifth round pick, outfielder.

SPEAKER_00

So he is a high-risk collegiate draftee. Um it's always interesting when players take shots like this. Um he hit tool has been the question with him. He's got decent power and he seems to have fixed his swing and miss issues, but it's a matter of impacting the ball at ideal launch angle, ideal, you know, ideal um, you know, hitting the bot ball in an ideal way. And it still affects his overall ability as a hitter. He if he gets to like being a fringe average hitter with above average power, then he could make it to the majors, but he's just not there yet. Uh he's pretty high risk. I think he's only in low A right now, which is not great for a collegiate.

SPEAKER_01

He's got a fun name though. I like that name. Yeah. James Quinn ironed. So yeah, that counts for a lot, I'm sure. But I'm sure his sineatra is probably garbage. Or he could prove me wrong. We'll see. Let's see. Our last player for the raise, Jose Urbina, starting pitcher from Venezuela.

SPEAKER_00

I think he's right. I think he's right. he's super high upside rapidly ascending talent he's he's probably one of the better sleeper arms in this product if you if you gave me if you gave me five guys i'd he's probably in you know upper tier of those five i would take him over esteban maja i i think he's just he's he's a level above him and his his fastball velocity is there and he's got more more development gone gone not quite as high actane as Mejia but you know he's he's got a lot of projectability remaining he needs to learn really how to sequence his pitches still he's still learning how to pitch and he he hasn't established exactly what his mix is but the stuff is there and that's that's the thing and he's also he's already in high A he's in the right organization for uh development organization for development of pitching for sure right so yeah definitely an interesting name so that's a that's a good tidbit to know if you are a believer in the hobby starting pitcher movement to definitely uh think about him oh that does the jump out of the way guys but thanks again Max for coming on thanks for leading the way but uh I'll catch you guys sometime soon all right thank you Bert bye all right so let's finish up with our Toronto Blue Jays they have out of the AL E's teams the biggest first Bowman checklist they have six guys we have Edward Duran Edward Duran catcher from Venezuela he's um he's great great defensive projection behind the plate he he doesn't have much power he's not going to have much power and he needs to keep increasing his hit tool to and our his hit tool arm accuracy are where he needs the most improvement to make it to the majors it's really only a backup catcher profile so we can really move on from him. Okay easy enough a blame bullard 12th round outfielder alliteration name like a superhero what are you thinking about him well he looks like a superhero in the field he's got great defense great speed definitely gonna stick in center field uh his his swing plane and his bat speed are great but he swings way too much right now he has almost no approach at the plate and that's going to have to get get cleaned up and eight round 2025 pick right so he's expected to be raw we'll have to wait and see on him. Okay let's move on to Gage Stanifer 18th round pitcher right handed pitcher yeah he's he's getting closer to the majors he's he's worked his worked his way up for a few years he's got two great pitches and that's what I want to focus on is that it's only two he is a starter right now uh and he's got high strikeout potential but I think he's gonna end up as a bullpen piece his command is not good but as a bullpen piece he could be a closer so if you if you're into high leverage closers which some people could be Stannifer's probably your guy there's a chance he makes it as a back end starter but but he's gonna get hit around frequently enough that that there's not much beyond being a back end piece. Yeah not a lot of closer collectors from that what I know but I'm sure they're out there there's collector for everything and everyone yeah I mean he's a high strikeout rate and he's he's been a starter for for a few years there's there's a longer history of being being in the rotation so that's that's why but his walk rate is is not really tenable you know for the long term and then we have uh next we have uh Juan Sanchez from the DR signed for just under a million yeah he's the dude he's gonna be the dude they they pushed him to low A don't look at what he's doing in low A he's got big time power potential and his his hit tool could also be average he's gotta you know figure out how to launch with more frequency and he's got to keep developing his body to to continue getting to the high end exit velocities that he's shown in the backfields and in the DSL but yeah he's probably a third baseman but but yeah he's he's a high end potential he's in tier two for us okay he's he's got big time hobby potential yeah so on the prospects live website max and the team they break down everyone into tiers tiers one through four and then tier none as well is that correct that's correct okay and tier none doesn't mean nothing tier m tier none means just not deserving to be in tier three right now it means they can get up to tier three but not right now.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah so I'm not trying to force Max to reveal all of his info that can be found on his site so definitely check that out if you want to see like his official tier list um and you'll be able to see it broken down very, very clearly for you.

SPEAKER_00

With that let's move on to their Korean starting pitcher Seijun moon yeah you know as much as I do about him there's not a lot going on he is a big projectable frame his fastball velocity should be in the upper 90s in time with more development but I mean he's Korean there's a big international market should have a lot of interest but other than that there's nothing really well developed right now.

SPEAKER_01

And our last guy for the Blue Jays Victor Arias from Venezuela.

Yeah he is he's 22 and he has good speed other than that um there's there's not a lot he he tries to go for power but it's not good raw power and he does not elevate well but those those hard hit balls on the ground when the infielders don't field them cleanly he has the speed to to make it sit first pretty easily but other than that it's just it's not it's nothing loud. So it's not really a good hobby name he's probably a fourth or fifth outfielder. But you probably will get to the majors as a fourth or fifth outfielder. So for the blue jays you're looking at Juan Sanchez and then there's everyone else yep might be the number two chase for the blue jays i I think Ju Sanchez is far and away number one but Soji Moon could be good.
